The Association has been the lead agency in a number of non-housing initiatives. However, the most significant example is the Central Renton Regeneration Strategy, which links housing investment with health/addiction, unemployment, education, the arts and community capacity building. The first stage of the strategy was completed in May 2004, with the opening of a new supermarket. In addition to providing high quality retail facilities, the shop included a post office and reintroduced banking services for the first time in over 30 years. The supermarket was owned and leased by one of the Association’s commercial subsidiaries. The second stage was the introduction of the Integrated Healthy Living Centre (IHLC) and chemist, public and owner-occupied housing developments and environmental improvements that were completed in 2006. The final stage in 2009, was the introduction of Extra Care housing, has redressed the mismatch between need and demand and reduced the impact of long-term demographic trends by introducing specialist housing for older people.
