Cordale Housing Association was founded, in 1993, on the principle that "we won't build a better standard of housing for people to enjoy their poverty in".
In other words, whilst responding to poor quality housing conditions was and remains a fundamental objective, it was acknowledged that sustainable development would not be achieved unless equal priority was given to the longer-term vision of redressing the social, economic and environmental issues that disadvantaged and stigmatised local residents.
It is against this broad interpretation of sustainability that Cordale Housing Association has evolved into the catalyst for social change in Renton and its surrounding areas, taking a lead role in a number of initiatives that link housing investment with health/addiction, unemployment, education, the arts and community capacity building.
Following an approach from tenants and residents in Alexandria to develop the Kippen Dairy site, WDC has identified Cordale as the preferred developer for the housing-led regeneration of Alexandria town centre. At the same time, tenants in Brucehill are keen for us to commence a feasibility study with a view to building new homes for rent in Hill Street, Brucehill.
"The work of this housing association is an example to the other 170 housing associations in Scotland of how to do it." - Alex Neil, Minister for Housing and Communities
"We know Cordale can deliver, we've seen it on our own doorstep and we have also seen a viable and well presented plan for Alexandria which was enthusiastically accepted by those who attended a presentation by Cordale." - Lorraine Watson of Central Alexandria Tenants and Residents Association (CATRA)
